And did you know that besides having a comfortable bed and closing your eyes, there’s more to sleep to learn about? If you’re wondering what there is to sleep, read on as I show you some awesome pieces of information on how sleep works and what you can do for better rest.

What to Know About Sleep

Here are five important things you should learn about sleep:

  1. No Sleep? Weight Gain and Loss Of Bone Mass

Weight Gain
Yes, you heard that right! If you lack sleep or suffer from chronic insomnia and other sleeping disorders, then your metabolism will begin to slow down. As a result, we gain weight little by little. Plus, the cravings from lack of sleep do not help as well!

Another published work shows that sleeping too little is linked to osteoporosis because our bodies receive less oxygen if we don’t rest enough. It also causes inflammation, and as a result, affects our bone mass. Additionally, lack of sleep and oxygen can cause dementia and heighten the risk of other physical and mental health problems.

  1. How Much Sleep Do We Need?

Sleep Hours
Now this is one thing that many people ask about. While the general rule is getting eight hours of sleep, it really depends on the person. Some are happy with seven hours, others with ten. However, there are a few rules to follow, depending on your age.

For starters, no one should sleep for less than six hours. It’s also best to have at least five hours of uninterrupted sleep. For adults, you should not have more than 11 hours of sleep, which will end up having you wake up tired. Yes, too much sleep also makes you feel tired and groggy!

  1. More Exercise Equals Better Sleep

Exercise
Did you know that exercising regularly can help with your sleeping patterns? Studies show that in order to get good sleep AND to have more additional hours of straight sleep, exercise will go a long way. Even just 15 minutes a day will do wonders with your sleep while burning calories and building muscle. I would recommend that you take about 20 minutes of your day to walk or follow cardiovascular exercise in the morning, which will increase your body temperature throughout the day and decrease as night comes, having you ready for sleep. Give it a few weeks and see the change!

While I do recommend exercising in the morning, I also suggest that you try yoga or meditation before sleeping. Experts say that these relaxing exercises before sleeping can help calm you down and provide deeper sleep.

  1. Are Small Naps Good For You?

Cat Napping
Naps aren’t for bums or lazy people! Did you know that catnapping for less than 20 minutes can help you rejuvenate before a full day of work? Additionally, it can help relax and calm you down during a stressful time. You can squeeze in a quick nap or two during your break. But do not go over 30 minutes of napping or you may end up feeling groggy!

  1. What Happens If You Have Insomnia?

Insomnia
Insomnia is one of the most common sleeping disorders people around the world suffer from. But besides feeling groggy in the morning, what does lack of sleep do to you?

Because the brain isn’t getting a good night’s sleep from insomnia, you lost a bit of your memory and you start becoming forgetful! Furthermore, insomnia would over stimulate the brain, which results in people suffering from headaches or fatigue in the morning. That’s why good sleep hygiene and proper remedies are needed to help control your insomnia and hopefully remove it for good.
