Home security is sadly a fact of life. It doesn’t matter where you live; a good home security device can deter intruders and make you feel safe. The real question is, how many do you need?
After all, in basic terms, the greater the number of security cameras, the better. However, if you have too many security cameras, you may attract more attention. The would-be intruders will be wondering what you have that is so important it needs to be protected by so many cameras!
That’s why you need to decide on the optimal level. It would help if you also considered using reputable commercial alarm systems. These are less likely to be tampered with by intruders.
Choosing Locations
The first thing you should consider is what areas of your property need to have security cameras. In general, these are the areas where break-ins are most likely to occur. You’ll want to cover the front and back door, along with ground floor windows and perhaps the main gate. It would also be useful to have camera parking.
Identifying the possible locations gives you a good idea of the number of cameras you need.
Choose Your Camera
The next step is to choose your camera. You won’t know it’s capabilities until you’ve chosen the one you want to use. This includes the area that it will cover and the quality of the image.
It’s a good idea to focus on the image’s quality as this is what will matter if someone does try to intrude into your home. It would help if you also considered whether your camera needs to have night vision. It’s usually a good idea unless you have an extensive array of security lights.
Mapping
With the type of camera chosen, you’ll know the range that’s covered. That means you’ll be able to draw your property and position the camera’s on your drawing. You don’t need to be a great artist to do this. The aim is to be able to see what areas each camera will cover.
You can do this by drawing the scope of each camera’s vision on your paper. Make sure you draw the scope as you position the camera. You’ll then be able to ensure that every part of your property is covered with a minimal number of cameras.
Moving Indoors
Once you’ve calculated the cameras that will sit outside your home, you need to think about what cameras should be inside your home. It’s best to choose motion detector cameras as these will only record when motion is detected.
Again, you’ll want to think about how many areas need to be covered. This will help you identify the number of cameras needed. In general, you’ll want to cover the front and back door, along with the base of your stairs.
There is no limit to the number of security cameras you can fit at your home, although you should verify that they only record things happening on your property. The trick is to work out the optimal coverage for the least number of cameras. This gives you your camera number and makes the system easier to maintain.
