Modern homes are now being built out of a variety of different materials, from traditional mud huts to tire walls, and of course metal. Of course, the image with metal is that it rusts and corrodes, making it a dubious choice for building with.
However, you may be surprised by the facts. The trick is to find a good quality steel merchant in your area and use them for all your metal building needs.
How Long Does Steel Last?
The life of steel will be directly affected by how you look after it. The more care you take of it, the longer it will last. A well looked after steel building should be capable of lasting 50 years or more.
But, you need to look after it!
Washing
Metal combines with oxygen and water to create rust. This may make you wonder why you would want to wash it. However, many other chemicals and compounds can affect steel, the real issue is when these eat through the outer layer of the steel, exposing it to the elements and allowing rust to start forming.
Washing your building regularly will remove the chemicals and keep your building looking nice.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye on the roof and remove anything that may collect, such as leaves and other muck; these can cause water to sit on your roof, speeding up the rusting process.
The best time to clean your building is in the spring to remove the winter grime, but you can do it a couple of times a year without any issues.
Protect It
Metal buildings are generally coated in a protective substance or painted. However, the elements will take their toll and start to breakdown this protective coating over time.
To prevent this from happening repaint your building after you’ve washed it each year. There are many different colors you can use on metal; you could even have a different color building every year!
Treat It
If any dents or scuffs appear on your metal building, then you need to take prompt action. If possible pop the dent out, if not buff it to ensure it is immaculate and then cover the affected area to protect it from the elements. You can use a metal filler to return the profile to the original form; if you wish. But, the important thing is that you protect it quickly.
Choose Steel
Steel is exceptionally strong; it can withstand the force of a hurricane. This makes it the best choice for your metal building as, if it is well looked after, there is a chance the building will outlive you.
Providing you commit to looking after your metal building you should be able to make it last for 50 years; making it a significant investment. But, if you neglect it, you’ll find it may only last ten years, which isn’t such a good investment.
