For many reasons recycling and reusing is becoming the trend in many aspects of life. It’s better for the environment and can give your home a real sense of individuality in your look and feel at home. It’s incredible where you can pick things up, and if you are creative about it, you can have the whole house done up on a budget.

Furniture Auctions

These can be a bit hit or miss, and sometimes it can take a few trips to get what you want, but if you persevere then it can be a real goldmine. There are different types of auctions, but the two that you can get the best finds at I find are house clearance sales and antique auctions. House clearances are where you will tend to be able to get things on the lowest of budgets. They are where a person has passed on, and their relatives have sent all the furniture and unwanted house items to auction to clear. And if you get it on a quiet day, some finds can be had for next to nothing. Antique sales tend to have more professional buyers attending and be a bit more expensive, but there is a higher rate of quality finds.

 Reclaimed Timber

Reclaimed timber is very calm and can come from anywhere from old railway sleepers to industrial packaging or demolitions. You can have it made into furniture or even use it creatively in the garden for borders etc. Always a very cool look.

Where To Keep Everything

Sometimes during a home make-over, gathering and putting reclaimed or recycled bits and pieces you need to store it all somewhere until it’s ready to go into the house. Look for a high-quality, secure storage place such as Life Storage Springfield to use as a temporary solution

Online Finds

There’s always weird and wonderful things for sale or even given away online, building materials, furniture and more. Regularly check places like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree, and you’ll find some real gems.

Local Artists

If you want to have something cool, artistic and unique, why not consider commissioning a local artist to create something for you with the brief being to use reclaimed materials. This can be a fascinating and rewarding process to go through and also gives you a real story behind the things in your house; this is a great conversation starter.

Learn Craft & Furniture-Making Skills

If you want something unique and that has meaning to you, go one step further and learn the craft and furniture making skills and put together your pieces. There are plenty of courses to discover these types of skills, and you can find them both online and in the real world as well. You may not get it correctly right the first time around, but then that’s also a big part of the fun of the process.
