There’s a lot that goes into creating the perfect bedroom – the furniture, color palette, decor items, and style all matter quite a bit.

However, there is one thing that is often overlooked when it comes to bedroom design: the placement of your bedroom furniture. That’s right; it’s not just what you buy that counts, but rather, how you display what you buy.

So how should you arrange the furniture in your bedroom?

Check out these four tips for arranging your bedroom furniture.

  1. It’s All About the Bed Placement

Bed Placement

Typically, the bed is the focal point of the room, as it is the largest piece of furniture in the room. For this reason, you should focus on the placement of the bed above anything else.

First things first, you typically want to avoid placing your bed under a window. This is because open windows can create uncomfortable drafts in a room if your bed is right below it. You also want to make sure you don’t place your bed in a position where it will be obstructing the door or any other walkway into your room.

In an ideal situation, you will place your bed against the wall opposite from the door, and not in line with the door. An equally great option is to place your bed against the wall that is diagonal to the door and centered in the middle of the wall.

This is known as the “command” position in Feng Shui, and it is the position that will make you feel the most supported and comfortable.

And speaking of support and comfort, all the rearranging in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t start with a comfortable bed. This all starts with buying the right mattress, like the Reverie customizable mattresses.

  1. Go From Big to Small

Small Bedroom Furniture Placement

Once you’ve figured out where you want to place your bed, keep arranging the rest of your furniture from the largest items down to the smallest items.

Typically, the dresser will come next, followed by the desk, the bedside tables, and finally the shelves and chairs.

It’s most common to place the dresser across from the bed, bedside the table next to the bed, and the desk in one of the corners of the room, but this will vary according to the size of your room and your tastes.

  1. Draw A Sketch

Perfect Bedroom

Even if you’re not an artist, starting with a sketch of what you want your room to look like can help a great deal.

Not only will drawing a sketch help you play around with different ideas, but it will also help you figure out what the ideal furniture placement is without having to do any heavy lifting or scratching up your floors.

Before you begin your sketch, make sure to measure the different pieces of furniture in your room. You can then scale these to your drawing to ensure that everything fits.

  1. Place Your Area Rug Carefully

Even though the bed is the focal point of the room, you could consider the area rug as a co-star to the bed.

In other words, the placement of the area rug is very important. Generally, you will want to place the area rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed. This will create a nice, pillowy area to step on when you get out of bed each morning.

If you have your bed tucked into the corner of the room, the best spot to place your rug is next to the bed rather than underneath it.

With these tips, your bedroom furniture will be arranged to perfection!
