Transporting Containers Locally And Internationally

Transporting Containers

Logistics is one of the biggest industries worldwide. If you are new to shipping and you need to transport containers, read below to learn more.

Where Do You Need To Deliver The Shipping Containers?

Do you need to deliver locally or internationally?  Is it within the same state or across states? There are many options for transporting containers. These can be by road, rail, or sea.

How Do You Choose The Mode Of Transport To Use?

The mode of transport depends on the shipment location.   Also, the contents highly matter.  There are materials deemed safe for any mode of transportation. However, some are considered fragile or even hazardous.  Check the transport mode if this applies to what you are shipping.

The element of time is also a consideration. Some may take more time to arrive compared to other transport options.

Cost is another factor. You need to calculate with the shipper the cost involved per transport type.

List all the pros and cons of each transport mode. You need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages so you can decide on the best route to take.

Local Shipments

For shorter distances, the most affordable option is shipment by road.  For longer distances, road transport becomes very expensive.

Shipping by road is convenient and quick. It is easy to find a local delivery company to manage your shipment. You can plan the delivery around your preferred time. Moreover, road transports usually do not require a lot of permits. Simply book a delivery company, load your contents, and await arrival.

In shipping locally, you need to determine the size you need. Is it a 10ft, 20ft, or 40ft truck? Check the weight of the items you have to transport and not only the size. This is to make sure that the appropriate truck size you choose is the best fit for your goods.  Here are types you can choose from:

Flat Bed

This is an inexpensive mode of transport. The flatbed can be used for many types of shipments. But you may need to have a separate forklift to unload and load to your container.

Tilt Tray

This truck has a tilt tray, which can be lowered to the ground after reversing in. To load, the container will be lifted. To unload, it needs to slide back.

Side Loader

The sider loader lifts the container off the driver’s side. Then, it is placed about 1 meter beside the truck’s trailer. Given this, access must be good.

Crane Truck

The crane truck is used to cater to intricate requirements. This is also used for tighter areas, over walls, barriers, and fences.

Moving Between Cities Or States

If you need to transport to another city or state, another good option is through rail. It’s one of the most cost-effective means for covering longer distances. Rail transport is also considered to be safe and efficient.

However, you may need other transport to bring the goods to rail and from the rail. You may also need to factor in storage facilities in between.

Transporting by sea can also be an option if you need to move to farther states. This option may not be as flexible or cost-effective compared to road or rail.

International Shipments

For shipments across countries, this is transportation by sea. From the port, you need to arrange other modes of transportation like road or rail.

International shipments require freight forwarders. There are many freight forwarders, and you can search for them online. Freight forwarder specializes in arranging the best strategy to get a sea container storage from one point to another. They can liaise with transport companies or shipping lines. The primary role of the freight forwarder is to ensure transport most safely and cost-effectively.   Note though that freight forwarders mostly deal with big companies that export huge volumes of products.

Permits And Documents Needed

Depending on the shipment location, you need to get the necessary permits.  Short local transport by truck usually does not need much documentation.

But as you move farther away and transport by rail or sea, you would already need permits. For rail shipments, secure a Container Safety Convention (CSC). The CSC is a certificate that proves the safety of the shipping container.

Note that there are instances that a CSC may not be required. This is possible if the container is under shipping container control, meaning the container is already certified.

But if you have purchased a shipping container, your logistics company should check if the container is safe to transport.

The Container Safety Convention (CSC) is mandatory for both rail and sea transport.  It guarantees the safety of the container’s journey. The CSC document indicates that a qualified marine surveyor has inspected the container.  It also certifies that it passed the specifications and guidelines set by the Container Safety Convention.  If the standards were not met, then the container cannot be transported.

Since the CSC is essential, make sure your supplier can issue this necessary document. There is a service fee in getting CSC certification.

To conclude, there are many options for shipping containers. The modes are via road, rail, or by sea. Depending on the location, you may need a combination of what we call multimodal shipping.  You may also need storage facilities during the whole transportation journey.
