Which Colour Tiles To Use Around Your Home

Every step of a home remodel is important. While ensuring the installation (whatever it may be) goes off without a hitch, it’s the stuff that is done at the outset of the project that will determine if all of the hard work was a success or a colossal, expensive, flop. Something that may seem so innocuous as choosing the right colours for the various materials that will be used can weigh heavily on the outcome.

What Colour Palette Do You Want to Work With?

While it might be tempting to jump right into choosing the materials that you’ll use, it’s much more efficient to begin by selecting your colour palette. Selecting a specific colour may mean you’ll have fewer options when it comes to the material (or vice versa). It’s essential to get these details ironed out to avoid the realisation that the original colour/material combination you envisioned won’t work.

If you have a favourite colour of tile that you’d like to work with, but you’ve never had to select a colour palette for your home before, here are a few options:

  • A warm colour palette is often made up of orange, red and yellow hues. When combined, these colours tend to make a room feel warmer (hence the name) and are used primarily in rooms that are associated with a certain degree of comfort, or relaxation (i.e. a bedroom, living room or dining room).
  • Conversely, a cool colour palette is traditionally made up of blues, greens and light purples. Contrary to warm colours, this palette is often used in rooms where there tends to be a great deal of activity, such as kitchens and bathrooms. These colours, when used correctly, can help create the illusion of space in rooms that perhaps don’t have much.
  • Finally, there are neutral colours. These tones tend to be made up of black, grey and white, and are considered neutral because they don’t evoke the warmth or coolness of the previous palettes. What neutral colours lack boldness, they more than make up for in versatility. These colours tend to be widely used in rooms that are designated as areas to receive and entertain guests.

Which Rooms Get Which Colour

Once you’ve settled on a colour palette for your tiles, you can begin assigning colour schemes, and other design considerations to specific spaces. Here are a few tips to help you pick the right tile for the room(s) you’re working on.

First, consider the size of the room before anything else. If the room is small and you’d like to make it look bigger, you might want to consider a lighter hue for your flooring tiles. This doesn’t only work in rooms, however. Using a cream or pastel coloured tile in hallways and tight entryways can also create the illusion of a larger space.

Next, select a tile style that you’d like to use. When considering the type of tile, it’s recommended that aspects other than aesthetic be considered, namely the intended use for the tile and its inherent durability. For example, stain-resistant glazed tile holds up particularly well in areas where stains are commonplace, namely kitchens and bathrooms.

When putting a room together, it’s important to remember that the colours you use don’t all have to reside on the same side of the colour wheel. Sometimes use a contrasting colour is a great way to create an element of visual intrigue in your room, something that can be difficult to achieve if you exclusively use homogenous colours.

Sourcing the Proper Supplier

Once you have everything settled in terms of colour palette and design, you can finally begin your hunt for the right tile for your home renovation project. There are many different tile options, including porcelain tile, ceramics and natural stone, available on the market, and the stock available at one wholesale tile supplier may differ greatly from that of another. While the idea of love, at first sight, may ring true for romantic relationships, there’s nothing wrong with being a bit more apprehensive when it comes to choosing the right tile for your home. The highly durable nature of ceramic tile means that even the most heavily used tile will last for years, so you want to ensure that you are deliberate about your choice.

Remember, the materials that you choose for your home renovation project can weigh significantly on the overall success of the project. Choosing the right colour, colour palettes or contrasting colours can make the difference between loving and tolerating your living space.
