Now that Christmas has passed and the New Year has been welcomed in look forward to 2018 and beyond with some predictions for the top trends in interior design.
Beginning with colors, expect to see indigo, matte black, ‘minion’ yellow, and washed-out green taking the stage in the coming years. At the same time, the currently popular millennial pink is predicted to decline in popularity.
This trend will see a renaissance in one of the oldest colors of dye, indigo. A bold and majestic choice, indigo will be a staple feature of many contemporary interiors.
While the resurgence of indigo looks backward to the past, the rise in matte black looks forward to the future. Smart and futuristic matte black will cover many smaller items such as lamps and chairs, adding a level of sleek sophistication to any room.
If these colors are too mature, the bubbly ‘minion’ yellow adds a fun and vibrant feel to 2018, while the washed-out green invites a piece of nature indoors.
2018 might also see a rise in flexible furniture to create flexible spaces for city apartments. With big-city dwellers living in increasingly smaller areas, it will be a challenge for designers, architects, and planners to create furniture which can have multiple shapes and uses.
Last year saw a boom in ‘smart home’ devices, but in the next two years, it is smart mirrors, which will gain popularity. Able to dictate lighting and incorporate health trackers, these multitasking mirrors will have a significant amount of functionality. They will even come with built-in entertainment systems!
With a rising backlash against unsustainable materials like leather, expect to see a rise in the use of different sustainable fabrics in the home. Products will be made from viable alternatives, such as animal-free leather from genetically-modified yeast or worm silk.
