550 Paracord

550 Paracord, also known as parachute cord, is a lightweight nylon kernmantle rope originally used in the suspension lines of parachutes. However, it has since been used in many other ways because of its durability and strength. If you are outdoorsy, you probably have at least one item made of paracord already, but even for those of us who love the great in-doors, paracord can be used to make all sorts of crafts and useful items.

When buying paracord, it’s crucial only to buy American-made cords. If you buy a paracord that was made overseas, you run the risk of the cord failing you due to inferior construction. Therefore, we always recommend Tough Grid because they are a family-owned, American company that sells made in USA paracord.

Some of the most popular uses include:

DIY Uses For 550 Paracord

Paracord bracelets and lanyards: You can take about 10-12′ of 550 paracord and braid it into a bracelet or even weave it to make a lanyard with your name on it. This is a prevalent use of paracord, and you find tons of braided bracelets for sale online, or you could braid the cords yourself!

Paracord dog leashes: Many people have begun using 550 paracord to make leashes for their dogs because it’s strong and can handle a larger dog better than many traditional leashes. Just take about 20 feet of cord, attach a clasp to one end, weave the cord through your dog’s collar, then attach a clasp at the other end without weaving it back through your dog’s collar. You’ll have a good strong leash that will not break from pulling or any hard tugging from your pup!

Paracord lamps: Do you need some extra light in an emergency situation? Try hanging a lamp or lantern using paracord! Paracord is incredibly strong and can easily support the weight of a small lamp or lantern. You need to tie two separate pieces of cord around the object on each side, then thread them through either end of an empty soda bottle. The soda bottle will be holding up your lamp – so make sure it’s clean and not cracked, so you don’t start a fire!

Paracord backpack: This is another one that people use all the time as more than just a very stylish backpack, but it could also come in handy if there was ever an emergency where you needed to make some rope out of what was available. All you have to do is cut off about 40 feet of paracord, weave the cord into mats, and then tie on some end pieces to form the backpack.

A piece of paracord can also be used as a belt. We know an old lady has worn the same belt for over 20 years, and it’s still going strong. There is no reason why your belt won’t last as long as hers: cut off some cord and weave it into a belt – it’s that simple!

If you’re ever without a carabiner but still need to hang something off of your bag or backpack, all you have to do is tie one end of some paracord around your item and use the other end like a makeshift carabiner. These types of makeshift carabiners are easy enough for kids to make and understand.
